Big City Pictures Holiday Logo Design Part 1: Ideation

Ever mentally-noting the ironically splicelicious meaning of ideation, Team BCP set about to concept-out a holiday riff on the Big City logo that could be used on the bigcitypix site as well as for e-mail holiday greeting cards.

The creativity commenced over e-mail for that oh-so-popular remote workflow.

George Spyros: Hey, what about turning the cross streets in the bcp logo into ribbon on a gift box? Not 3 quarters view like this, obviously…

Johanna Wolff Abzug: i can sort of see it, but the perspective on the buildings might make it look a little funny
what if each individual building was a gift box and then happy holidays or whatever was written in the middle?

George: That might work as long as it doesn’t get too busy. What I did when I added the green roof animation was to only have the trees on the tall left building on the upper left. So maybe only one or a handfull of buildings for design.

Another thought is to make the entire logo into a bow. So that the shape of each building is a loop in the now.

That said, taking it back to the first idea, change the color pallet of the logo to shades of red. Maybe strip off building details like windows etc. Then have the logo be the bow on top of the ribbons on a gift box that is wrapped in red ribbon. The cross streets merge and connect with the intersecting ribbons. Perhaps the gift box is done in the pseudo 3D style of one of the building which as you say already looks like a box. Use the current blue color family for the box with the red logo as the bow.

Thoughts?

Johanna: i’ll make some sketches and see if i can picture it then, and will send them to asap
i’m moving pretty slowly though; i am on day 2 of what seems to be shaping up to be a flu or bug of some sort

And Johanna threw in some snow flakes that look promising. Explored some more in the next round of creative, but we’ll probably save that for next year…

iPhone 4 Unlock: Carrier AT&T Unchained by Canadian, First-ever (Video)

Mission accomplished: the first-ever and only American iPhone 4 has been unlocked from its carrier which would be AT&T. A wily Canadian got his hands on the mobile device and after a long night of work shows off his functioning iPhone 4 in the video above.

Consumer Reports says it is unable to recommend the iPhone 4 until Apple fixes antenna problems. Although Consumer Reports isn’t making a specific recommendation, say Paul Reynolds, you can try using duct tape to cover the lower left hand side of the iPhone 4 to avoid the “death grip” and lose signal strength.

Having reception trouble with the iPhone 4? Consumer Reports says the easiest fix for the death grip antenna glitch may be a sliver of duct tape. CNN.com’s tech reporter John Sutter also says you can get yourself an iPhone bumper that goes around the outside edge of the device. Perhaps instead of the silver duct tape, some black gaffer’s tape might prove to be a more elegant option?

iPhone 4 FaceTime Commercials: Are Apple’s TV Ads “Heartbreaking?” (Video)

First there was the 1-minute wordless Apple FaceTime spot set to Louis Armstrong music featuring the intimate moments in family life which can now be shared over distances thanks to this new iOS4 technology. Fortune online is calling Apple’s new commercials for FaceTime “heartbreaking.” Spolier warning: nobody gets any bad news. As a matter of fact, in two out of the four spots, the characters in fact receive good news. In the other two, things are bittersweet at worst and basically all the ads have happy endings. We think the emotional term the business-minded folks over at fortune were looking for was “heart-warming.” Hey, it’s July — it must have been the heat (wave) going to their heads. Perhaps, Philip Elmer-DeWitt, no matter how good is his depth of knowledge of Apple, is thinking of this heartbreaking iPhone 4 FaceTime ad.
