DiskTracker is an easy to use, effective and cost-conscious way to catalogue files that have been burned to DVD or CD-ROM. This is a great little tool for backing up your Quicktime files for projects.
What is a Disk Cataloger?
We use DiskTracker to record the directory structure, but not the contents, of a volume into a saved directory structure called a disk catalog. Because loading a disk catalog is much faster than loading the directory structure from the actual disk, searching and browsing a disk catalog is much faster than searching or browsing an actual disk.
More important, a disk cataloger can store disk catalogs for more than one volume. And, a volume does not need to be mounted on the desktop while you are browsing its catalog. This allows you to have a single disk catalog containing the library of all of your CD-ROM’s, removable media volumes, and floppy disks.
Using a disk cataloger you can, in one motion, search all of your volumes, be they mounted on your desktop, in a box next to your machine, or at the office on the other side of town. And, because only the directory information — not the actual volume data — is saved, disk catalogs are quite compact.
Tips for using DiskTracker as a Disk Cataloger
At Big City Pictures, we give each volume a number and don’t worry much about the name. This way, physical discs can be stored in numerical order. After searching DiskTracker and finding a disc that we want to retrieve data from, we simply note the disc number and then find it in a binder or case. It’s as easy as that!
How To Use DiskTracker
Step 1: Use Toast or the DVD burning abilities of the Mac OS
Step 2: Once burning is complete, launch DiskTracker with the disk loaded in the DVD drive
Step 3: From the DiskTracker menu, or using the Command+K keyboard shortcut, “Scan Mounted Volume.” The directory structure, but not the contents are now archived in your database library.
